I Want Revenge, ranked number two on some Kentucky Derby polls this season, and Chocolate Candy, rated in the Top Ten Derby choices with his four wins from nine starts, are two of this season's most favored Thoroughbreds to give Pioneerof The Nile a Run for the Roses on May 2.
Seattle Slew's Influence Remains
Seattle Slew was one of eleven Thoroughbreds of tremendous determination and power, speed and agility, to win the American Triple Crown, the Sport of Kings' most daunting task. The dark bay colt was clumsy as a foal, so much so that he earned the nickname of a similarly characterized cartoon figure.
A son of Bold Reasoning, by Boldnesian, by Bold Ruler, Seattle Slew went to Thoroughbred racing school and soon straightened out his awkward movements. The schoolee's ancestry was loaded with runners of note.
Boldnesian's mate was Reason to Earn, Seattle Slew's granddam. Reason to Earn was by Hail to Reason--Sailing Home. Seattle Slew's dam, Mary Charmer, was by Poker, by Round Table.
Small in stature, but grand in pedigree, Seattle Slew raced to the tenth of eleven all time Triple Crown championships, demolishing his competitors in 1977.
The sire of 509 mares who have foaled 2,800 offspring, Seattle Slew's best has produced over 400 two-year-old winners and 184 stakes winners (The Blood-Horse magazine, February 21, 2009/No. 8, ppgs753-754).
Chocolate Candy Is Slew Grandson
Into the realm of Slew three-year-old winners this year came Chocolate Candy, a son of Candy Ride and a grandson of Seattle Slew. Chocolate Candy has clipped off wins in this year's El Camino Real Stakes February 14, and the California Derby on January 17. In addition, he got to the wire second behind Kentucky Derby favorite Pioneerof The Nile in the Santa Anita Derby April 4.
Chocolate Candy is a bay colt owned by Sid and Jenny Craig Trust.

Chocolate Candy's dam is Crownette, by Seattle Slew--In Memory. In Memory is by Alydar--Won't Tell You, by Crafty Admiral.
I Want Revenge Pedigree
Notably surging from last to first in this year's Wood Memorial on April 4, I Want Revenge is solidly hoofed in pedigreed winners. His grandsire is the prolific sire A.P. Indy, sired by Seattle Slew--Weekend Surprise.
