Despite the facts of past quarter cracks on his horse's hoofs, a packed starting gate, and drawing post twenty, trainer Richard Dutrow, Jr. says everything is go.
Big Brown's connections have supreme confidence in their steed's chances to win over all drawbacks in Saturday's 134th Kentucky Derby. Brown has experienced quarter cracks on all four hoofs, started just three times, hasn't faced a field as large as the Derby will present, and hasn't run the distance of this race, let alone never broken from the No.20 gate.
But trainer Richard Dutrow, Jr. says his horse is ready and will do the job on May 3. Dutrow likes the idea that Big Brown will be loaded last in gate 20, giving Brown the minimum time to wait for the break. In Wednesday's post position draws, Dutrow had the 16th pick and decided to go for No.20, with posts one, two, 18, and 19 also available to him.
Historically, winners from gate 20 have been few. As a matter of fact, there has been exactly one victor from that post position, Clyde Van Dusen in 1929.
Winners from the other posts since 1900 are as follows:
Post One --- 12 winners; Post Two --- 9; Post Three --- 8; Post Four --- 10; Post Five --- 12; Post Six --- 6; Post Seven --- 8; Post Nine --- 4; Post Ten --- 10; Post Eleven --- 3; Post Twelve --- 3; Post Thirteen --- 4; Post Fourteen --- 2; Post Fifteen --- 3; Post Sixteen --- 3; Post Seventeen --- 0; Post Eighteen --- 1; Post Nineteen --- 0
